Why purchasing wine from a wine bar is a good idea

In most scenarios buying good wine entails finding a winery that makes it. However, this is not always an easy task in Ottawa. Specifically, when you go out and get a taste of a wine that you find you enjoy and want more of and the problem is, it is imported.

Enter the wine bar, as most liquor stores, in Ottawa or elsewhere, do not have extensive assortments of wine on hand, a wine bar will. Additionally, the wine bar may even help you locate the imported wine you seek if they do not have it readily available. One thing that helps is, knowing your wines.

This means understanding how they are made, which entails the type of grape, where they are grown, geographically, the soil they are grown in, the time of year the grapes were picked for a particular batch, and finally, whether or not sugars were added as part of the fermentation process. For instance, some Deutsch wines picked at various times of the year can have no additives, (by Deutsch Law). While each batch is from the same grape they all have different qualities because of the time or season of harvesting. This applies to all wine.

It pays to know your Wine before making a purchase

Certain restaurants in Ottawa will sometimes offer a vintage or a small part of a collection of wine, but they will only do so in certain instances. In addition, to the uninitiated, it is easy mistake one wine from the next. If you have an interest in collecting wines, particularly those that are imported. Gathering the type of information given in the example above on the wine you are interested in is a good beginning.

The reason is because those who sell wine, having the highest consumption rate by scale, are susceptible to fraudulent practices trying to sell a low quality wine as a vintage, (restaurants in particular). This is why doing the research will always pay off in the end. By knowing what you are looking for and in having the ability to spot a fake will ensure your success, even when dealing with a wine bar, as a collector of fine wines in Ottawa & Gatineau.

Wine Tasting and Wine Bars

One would think that these two things would be synonymous. However, here in Ottawa and Gatineau this is not always true. There are some wine bars that do not have any wine tastings available to their patrons.

Accordingly, while it is fun to pass the time on the weekends with a good choice of wine and your best friends, it is even better when you can plan to join in a wine tasting as part of the time spent with your friends. While all wine bars do have a menu specifically designed for the public and another designed for those who enjoy tasting a variety, it is the second menu that needs close scrutiny before choosing a meet spot for a friends night out.

Look For a Variety of Wine Choices
Here in Ottawa and Gatineau there are a lot of different venues that cater to the wine tasting public and each has their own set and types of wine they choose to serve. There are the California wines, the Italian wines, German, French, and of course, the wines produced in Southern Ontario. The unique property of the Canadian wines makes them comparable to the European and the California wines because of the geological location.

Therefore, when looking a wine tasting menu in Ottawa or Gatineau, you should look for a regional mix of international or local choices. This will give you and your friends a well rounded variety to peruse in the course of an evening out. Additionally, there should also be a good mix between red and white wines and a selection of the grape as well as what type of vineyard they were grown, by the region.

The Soil Has a Strong Effect on the Taste
Depending on the region, the soil will determine how wine made from a specific grape will taste as well as the time of year the grapes are picked for making the wine. If you are a true connoisseur then you understand. Even if you are a novice at knowing the intricacies involved with wine tasting, you can grasp the importance of finding a venue that provides a selection of wines from a certain region. This way you can find a series of venues here in Ottawa and Gatineau and the surrounding area to visit on alternating trips to get a full experience of what the world of wine tasting has to offer.

Finding the Perfect Place for a Quiet Dinning & Wine Experience

As the case may be, there is a chance that there is too much television in my diet. I get stuck watching programs where everyone either goes out to a ‘Central Perk” kind of place or they end up where the patrons sit around guzzling beer and shots of hard liquor. While places like those are fine, there are times when it is nice to go and sit quietly and sip on a nice glass of wine and eat something other than ‘bar food’ in Ottawa.

The natural progression is to go out with friends or your college buddies after a hard day, or week at work. However, maybe there are those not so rare occasions when you feel like spending some time on your own when you go out. It is more fun to discover new places sometimes instead of drinking alone at home.

As trends would have it, we are beginning to see more bars that serve wine popping up in and around the Ottawa area as alternative places to go and hang out, per se, and have a good meal along with some great wine. While you will not find a dart board or pool table at a wine bar, you will find a wide variety of different drinks and wines on the menu. In addition, you will find a classier clientele to mingle with.

When you feel adventurous and maybe even a bit studious going out to a wine bar in Ottawa alone is a fun experience, even if just for the education on the different wines available. Mind you, there is no rule stating that there is only one socially acceptable beverage. This explains the plethora of choices of alcohol, beer, and wine on the market.

If you venture into a new place, feel free to ask for a comparable substitute if your preferred wine is not available. Doing so helps broaden your palate and gives you another topic for conversation. Understandably, in preparing to visit a wine bar instead of the local beer joint down the street, it is a great time to dress up a little, giving your sports jersey and blue jeans a rest for an evening.

This makes going to any wine bar in Ottawa a great place to bring a date. Most bars that focus on serving wine will hold periodic wine tasting events that are great fun for couples and singles alike. One suggestion might be would be to do some research online to locate the local wine clubs and dinner bars.

They will normally have live entertainment resembling a small jazz quartet or a piano player. Establishments such as these cater to a different clientele than what you will find in your local Ottawa Pub down the street, (where everyone just might know your name). You will find better food and a quiet atmosphere to enjoy good wine, great company, (if you bring a friend), and a new adventure, visit one soon.
